Hewell Wins Season Opener

The Lions kick off the cross country season at Montreat College on this brisk September Saturday morning. Emmanuel joined five other teams at Howard Fisher Memorial Field in Black Mountain, North Carolina for the 5k opener. The course was a somewhat messy and ran a little slower than usual due to heavy rain two days before, but it didn't stop the teams from showing toughness over the 5,000 meters.

Sophomore Makayla Hewell started off the season with a strong race, picking up right where she left off from a strong track season! She took the lead around the mid-point of the race and didn't look back. She crossed the line in just over twenty minutes (20:08), besting second place by nearly fifteen seconds. "I'm very proud of Makayla! She ran exactly how we talked about before the race, getting out a little more conservative and working her way up to the front to help dictate the pace in the second half," says Coach Hall
Makayla was followed by the duo of seniors, Neely Hallman and Heidi Schreiber, Junior Kaylynn Rainey, and Sophomore Carli Broome to round out the top five. Coach Hall had this to say about the morning, "I'm not terribly concerned about times this morning since the course conditions weren't going to allow for fast times. Today I wanted to see how we ran as a team, how we could push one another along to greater performances by working up in a group, and I wanted to see how tough we could be. I think we have room for improvement, but we're off to a good start!"

The Lions will have next weekend off and pick up at Winthrop University on September 17th.
