FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team hosted conference opponent Southern Wesleyan University on Friday night. The night started with the recognition of Seniors Gabby Ghassedi, Aysha Avery, Stephanie Hardy, Mia McKensey, and Jessica Gray. As the game progressed, the Lions downed SWU in a quick three setter. This win brings the Lions record to 16-12 overall, 12-3 in conference.
The Lions opened up the first set with triple kills from Sophomore Taylor Roberts, Mia McKensey, and Jessica Gray. After dropping two points, EC would go on a six point run to further extend their lead. The Warriors would fight back to reduce their deficit to just 4 points, but EC had no problem closing out the first set 25-17.
The Lions carried the momentum into the second set and commanded the net with a .409 hitting percentage. Sophomore Mia Cotton would serve 9 straight serves while picking up 2 aces. The Warriors struggled with 9 attack errors and allowed Emmanuel to easily take the second set 25-9.
The final set started well for the Warriors who grabbed a quick 5-0 lead. The Lions would finally put some points on the board with back to back kills from Jessica Gray. The teams continued to exchange points until a kill form Freshman Gabi Reagan sparked a four point run for the Lions, allowing them to take their first lead of the set. Their lead would be short lived, however, when SWU's offense responded with seven kills to put them ahead 20-18. Reagan would pick up another kill to close in on SWU before a big kill from Gabby Ghassedi tied up the set. Ghassedi would follow that up with a service ace to take the lead. Jessica Gray would put down two more kills before a final kill from Mia McKensey captured the victory, 25-22.
Jessica Gray led the Lions with 15 kills, Mia McKensey followed behind with 13 kills and picked up her 400th career block. Setter Stephanie Hardy ended the night with 36 assists. Libero Aysha Avery tallied 14 digs, Gabby Ghassedi followed behind with 10 digs and her fifth career kill from the DS position.
Next up, the Lions will travel to conference opponent North Greenville University tomorrow (November 16th) for their final regular season matchup.
