FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team fell to Augusta University 3-1 on Tuesday night. This loss brings the Lions record to 11-11 overall, 7-2 in conference.
The Lions had a strong start to the first set gaining a 9-3 lead. Several EC errors followed to help the Jaguars climb back into the game. The teams continued to exchange leads until the Lions found themselves up 23-22. A kill from Augusta's Madison Malloch kept the Jag's alive before back to back Emmanuel attack errors allowed Augusta to take the first set 25-23.
Sophomore Hallie Richardson kicked off the second set with a big kill before Sophomore Mia Cotton served an ace. Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Jaguars hit back hard with 8 straight points. The Lions would battle back to get within four points, but the lead proved to be too much as Augusta took set number two 25-20.
In a crucial third set, the Lions pounded away 15 kills while keeping the Jag's at one of their lowest hitting percentages of the night. Seniors Mia McKensey and Jessica Gray combined for 7 third set kills to help propel the Lions to a 22-18 lead. The Jags would fight back to a 22-22 tie, before the Lions closed out the set 25-23.
EC carried the momentum over into the fourth set to take a 4-0 lead. Both teams tallied 18 kills each, but Augusta kept their hitting errors down to just 2, allowing them the upper hand. Augusta took the final set 25-22.
Mia McKensey led the team with 15 kills and a .538 hitting percentage.
Congratulations to Jessica Gray on putting down her 1000th career kill, making her only the second Emmanuel women's volleyball player to conquer that feat.
