Several Lions Set Career Highs In Victory Over Converse
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team came back from a 0-2 deficit to defeat Converse College on Saturday afternoon, 3-2. This win brings the Lions record to 5-7 overall, 1-1 in conference.
The teams battled it out in a lengthy first set. After trailing by six points, Sophomore Hallie Richardson would put down her 3rd kill of the night while Junior Jenna Woodruff followed with a kill of her own. A Lions service error would follow before a string of 7 points put the Lions up 21-20. The set would extend past the 25 point mark and the lead would shift back in favor of the Valkyries. A final Lion effort from Senior Jessica Gray tied the score up at 27-27, before back to back Emmanuel errors gave Converse the first set, 27-29.
The Lions trailed the majority of the second set as the Valkyries got off to a hot start. Emmanuel began to find their way back into the set after a couple 4 point runs. Another kill from Jessica Gray would tie up the score at 19-19, then the Lions would force a lead change. Hallie Richardson continued to add to her career high kills to put the Lions in position to close out the set 24-21. Converse wasn't finished yet, however, as Brittany Tepedino put down three kills, combined with two Emmanuel errors, allowing the Valkyries to steal the second set 24-26.
In a must win third set, the Lions delivered 15 kills, with almost half of them coming from Gray. Facing a 24-21 lead once again, the Lions made sure to close out the set with a kill, 25-21.
The fourth set saw another dominant Emmanuel performance as the Lions put away 14 kills compared to the Valkyries 4. Freshman Gabi Reagan picked up two more kills to had to her career high 7 kills. The Lions took set number four, 25-20.
Senior Mia McKensey put down back to back kills to kick off the final set. Another kill from Jessica Gray put the Lions up 3-0. Converse responded with a kill and block combined with an EC error to tie up the score. McKensey's third kill of the set allowed the Lions to side out before she delivered a service ace. Now on top, the Lions never looked back and closed out the fifth set 15-7.
Several Lions had career highs including 24 kills and 19 digs from Jessica Gray. Senior Stephanie Hardy dished out a career high 63 assists, helping Hallie Richardson, Mia McKensey, and Gabi Reagan all secure career high kills with 14, 13, and 7 respectively.
Next up, the Lions will take on USC Aiken on the road on Tuesday, October 1st.
