FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team fell to Lander University, 3-1 on Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions opened the first set neck and neck with the score tied at 6-6. Lander began to pull away with a five point run that spawned from a kill by Deona Mims. Trailing 6-11, Coach Friddle called a timeout. Upon returning to the court the ladies responded with six unanswered points of their own to take the lead 12-11. The score would remain close, until a big block from Sophomore Taylor Roberts and Senior Stephanie Hardy put the Lions ahead at 23-22. An attack error from the Bearcats set the Lions up for set point. Lander would have one last chance off of an Emmanuel service error, but Senior Jessica Gray's kill closed out the first set, 25-23.
The entire second set seemed to be in Lander's favor as the Bearcats minimized their errors while capitalizing on Emmanuel's. The Bearcats took set two, 25-20.
In set number three the Lions pulled away with a six point lead, the biggest of the night. Despite the advantage, the Bearcats would put up six kills to the Lions two. Trailing 19-20, Sophomore Mia Cotton would put down back to back kills before Senior Aysha Avery served an ace. Eventually the Lions found themselves on top with a 24-21 advantage. Unfortunately for the Lions, Lander would respond with a five point run to steal the set away at 26-24.
Emmanuel found themselves in familiar territory in set number 4, sitting on top once again with a four point lead. The Bearcats would then put down several kills to tie the score back up at 23-23. Lander's Reilly Kunstler dished out back to back kills to take the final set 25-23.
Mia Cotton led the Lions with 16 kills.
Next up, the Lions head to Gaffney, South Carolina to take on Limestone College in their first conference match of the season.
