The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team kicked off the Lee University Invitational against Shepherd University on Friday morning. After an hour and a half of play, the Lions fell 3-0.
The Lady Lions failed to execute against the Rams early in the match. Apart from a couple ties early in the first set, Emmanuel trailed behind the Rams who claimed the first set, 25-17.
The ladies saw improvement in the second set starting with a Kill from Sophomore Taylor Roberts. An attack error from the Rams, followed by a service ace from Sophomore Mia Cotton started a string of runs to put the Lions ahead 10-6. Shepherd would respond with a five point run of their own to take back the lead, 11-10. A few more exchanged points kept the score even until the Rams began to pull away once again. Six unanswered kills from Shepherd led them to a 25-23 second set victory.
The momentum stayed in favor of the Rams who put up nine points to the Lions three at the start of the third set. The Lions finally began to make a move with a kill from Mia Cotton. Senior Jessica Gray followed up with a kill of her own. The Rams followed with an attack error before a kill from Taylor Roberts gave the Lions their fourth consecutive point and forced the Rams to call a timeout. Shepherd capitalized on the break as an Emmanuel attack error allowed the Rams to side out. One more three point push from the Lions followed, tying up the set at 10-10. Unfortunately for the Lions, their efforts would fall short as Shepherd flipped the momentum with back to back service aces. The Rams took the third set 25-22.
The Lions continue action tonight at 6pm against tournament host Lee University.
