Franklin Springs, GA - The Emmanuel College Women's Volleyball team started off their season with a home tournament against several division 2 teams from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this weekend.
After losing several seniors as well as gaining a new head coach, the program seemed to be facing some obstacles, however, the lions didn't disappoint.
Under the guidance of Coach Inga, the lions ended the weekend undefeated with a new record of 4-0. The ladies first match was Friday against Albany State where they quickly made work of the team, defeating them 25-17, 25-20, and 25-16. Julie De Blanck and Abby Bradford led the team in kills with 9 and 8 respectively. With the first game under their belt, the lions were looking strong going into the rest of the tournament.
The next match was against a much stronger University of West Georgia who gave Emmanuel a tough fight. The first set went back and forth the first 9 points until the lions finally started to break away. A few errors by the wolves as well as a couple aces by the Lions put Emmanuel up 16-10. With a comfortable lead, the lions went on to take the first set. Set 2 started off well for UWG as they kept the lead for the first half. With the score at 12-7, the Lions finally decided to pick up the energy and scored 10 straight points before the wolves could score again. The wolves fought back for a few points until the lions put them away for another set. Sets 3 and 4 were both very even until the end of each set where the wolves turned up the intensity to claim the sets with a score of 25-19 and 25-22 respectively. With a 2-2 game at hand, the 5th set was the deciding factor. The lions took no time to take the lead with 6 straight points. The wolves tried to fight back, earning a few points here and there, but Emmanuel easily took the last set 15-9 to defeat UWG. Some standout players included Erica Burnham with 14 kills, Abby Bradford with 13 kills, and Ally Kane with 27 digs.
Saturday started with a game against Clark Atlanta. Erica Burnham delivered 10 kills and an ace while Julie De Blanck had 8 kills and an ace herself. The game went fairly quickly in 3 sets for the Lions, winning 25-15, 25-15, 25-19. The last match of the tournament was against Miles College where the lady Lions went out with a bang. With a total of 9 service aces, Rachel Tolleson and Nicole Kraning each had 3 themselves. Julie De Blanck recorded 12 kills and the lions took the match 25-12, 25-20, 25-5.
The season opener went well for the lions and gave them a lot of momentum as they continue the rest of their season. Their next matches will be at the Lee invitational in Tennessee next Friday and Saturday September 11-12.
