Wingate, SC - The Lions have completed their first two meets of the outdoor season and have brought home 10 NCCAA Championship qualifying marks! The teams started their outdoor season at Emory University for an invitational with over 35 teams on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19. Freshmen distance runners and former high school teammates, Jose Diaz and Makayla Hewell started earning the qualifiers in the 10k on day one of the invite. Makayla Hewell became the first female runner in Emmanuel College Track history to break forty minutes in a 10k, running 39:53.33 in her first ever race at that distance! Dikerrio Ramsey also earned his spot at nationals in the long jump on Friday.
On Saturday Sam Cortese, Tanisha Summerour, and Quintin Long represented well in the throws (shotput and discus). Sam and Tanisha had marks that qualified them for Nationals in the shotput, while Quintin qualified in both the shotput and the discus events, setting lifetime personal best throws and new school records in both events!
Freshmen sprinters Deja Barthell and Ashley George started the season off with qualifying marks as well, running 100 meter dash and the 100 meter hurdles respectively. Deja ran 13.12 seconds for the 100, while Ashley ran the 100 hurdles in 16.89 seconds, both times were new school records!
Kelvin Kirui had an extremely strong showing in his two events on Saturday, winning and qualifying for nationals in both the 1500 meter run as well as the 5,000, setting new school records in both events! Kelvin ran 14:49.88 for the 5,000 and followed it up with a 3:54.57 in the 1500.
Dikerrio Ramsey and Tamarick Watson rounded out the qualifiers on Saturday of the first meet running qualifying marks in the 200 meter dash. Tamarick ran 22.75 seconds and Dikerrio ran 22.42 seconds, setting another school record with his time.
For the Lions' second meet they went to Wingate University to compete against several Conference Carolinas schools. Freshman Kelvin Kirui picked up another win in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:55.96, while Senior Quintin Long bested his own school records in both the shotput and discus with throws of 44' 11" for the shot and 152' 2" in the discus. Jonathan Turner had a very strong showing in the javelin throw beating his personal best throw by over 20 feet, throwing 120' 1".
On the women's side, Senior Jazmin Konnick missed qualifying for nationals in the 800 meter run by a mere tenth of a second, running 2:24.60. Freshman Makayla Hewell ran a strong 1500 meter race, clocking a time of 5:09.32 for her college debut in the event.
The Lions will take a couple of weeks to train and be back in action on Saturday, April 9th at Southern Wesleyan University for the Susan Rouse Invitational.
