YOUNG HARRIS, GA. - The Emmanuel College women's tennis team traveled to Young Harris College for their first match of the season. The women had a tough time figuring out how to play while battling against the wind. Number one doubles pair, Zyanya Rogel and Lauren Castillon were unable to find any rhtyhtm and their opponent used it to their advantage to defeat them 6-0. In doubles pair #3, Julia Ramos failed to finish the volleys, while Kristina Khmeleveskaia could not hold her groundstokes. The duo lost 6-0. Doubles #2, Victoria Silva and Selena Donecker successfully defeated their opponent 6-4. Poaching volleys from Silva enabled Donecekr to finish the point with her overhead smashes. After doubles, the women's team was down 0-1.
In singles, the matches were close. Freshman Aussie, Julia Ramos, used her strong backhand to dictate the match and came into the net to finish the point. Ramos gave the women's team their first point, to tie the score 1-1. Selina Donecker won her match in the third set tiebreak, after losing the first set 1-6. Unfortunately, senior, Victoria Silva and sophomore, Marta Rozados both faced consistent opponents from Young Harris and struggled to find solutions to defeat their opponent. The Young Harris team only needed one more win as they were leading 2-3.
After coming back from 3-8 to 8-8 in the third set tiebreak, Khmeleveskaia was unable to win the match, losing 8-10. Freshman, Rogel played no.1 singles and faced a counterpuncher opponent. The first set was a battle with both players having set points, but at the end, the Mountain Lions had the edge and defeated Rogel 6-7 and 1-6. The Lady Lions lost by a final score of 2-5.
Next up, the team will travel to the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, SC to compete in the ITA Southeast Regionals.
