Sumter, SC. - The Emmanuel College women's tennis team travelled to Sumter, SC for their fall semester Conference Tournament. The draw for singles was divided into 3 groups, with A, B and C draw. The draw for doubles was divided into 2 groups, with an A and B draw.
On the Women's Singles A draw, senior Victoria Silva, had a tough match against the number 5 seed. Silva was able to manipulate the ball to produce amazing angles and finished off with a volley. Silva won the match 6-4, 1-6, 10-8. Silva's second match was stopped due to a lightning warning but took the first set 6-4. Senior, Maria Raich had to stop her match due to a lightning warning, but she won the first set 7-5. Raich's aggressive groundstrokes gave her the opportunity to end the points in the net and move her opponent around.
On the Women's Singles B draw, Freshman Selina Donecker, did not give up in her match. Donecker lost the first set with a score of 6-7. In the second set, Donecker became more aggressive and took control of the match to win 6-3. In the third set match tie break, Donecker kept the aggressive mind play and won 11-9. Sophomore Marta Rozados battled against a tough opponent from Southern Wesleyan. Rozados was down in the first set 2-5, and was able to fight back to 4-5, but was unable to break her opponent. In the second set, Rozados moved her opponent around the court and took control of the match with her aggressive forehand and big serves to win 6-1. In the third set match tie break, Rozados was 2-8 down and came back to tie the score 8-8. Unfortunately, she was not able to find the finishing points and lost 8-10. Sophomore, Lauren Castillon had to stop her match due to a lightning warning and lost the first set 6-4. Freshman Julia Ramos was unable to use her volleys and aggressive backhand, as her opponent kept her in the baseline. Ramos lost 2-6, 3-6.
On the Women's Singles C draw, sophomore, Ingrid Martinez wasted no time with her opponent, using her aggressive forehand, she was able to set herself up to finish the point in the net. Martinez won 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore, Kristina Khmelevskaia used her strong serve, and aggressive forehand to defeat her opponent from Southern Wesleyan 6-3, 6-1.
On the Women's Doubles A draw, new duo Donecker and Silva were successful in their first-round match, winning 6-1 with aggressive shots from Donecker and put-away volleys from Silva. In their second round, they faced the second seed. With nearly every game going to sudden death deuce, they were defeated 3-6.
On the Women's Double B draw, new duo Raich and Rogel won their first-round match 6-1 with Raich setting Rogel up for the volleys and finishing the points. In their next match, they faced the second seed. With Raich's consistent forehand and Rogel's powerful overhead, they were able to defeat the Southern Wesleyan duo 6-3. Sophomore duo, Castillon/Rozados won their first-round match 6-1 with Castillon's strong volleys and Rozados' aggressive forehand down the line. In their second-round match, the duo was down 1-4 and saved a match point but was unable to defeat their opponent from Mount Olive, 5-7. The freshman duo Ramos and Khmelvskaia were unable to find their rhythm and lost their match.
The women's team will continue action today at the Palmetto Tennis Championships.
