Women's Tennis Topped By Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - On Saturday, February 9th the Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team had their second match of the season against Wofford College, a Division 1 school. Despite positive attitudes on the court, the Lions couldn't find solutions against their opponent.

After a tough first match last weekend on their season opener, the Lady Lions hoped for different results today. Against another Division 1 school, the Lions were expecting to have tough matches, unfortunately, their expectancy and preparation were not enough to beat the Bull-Terriers.   

Number 3 double composed by Marta Rozados, Spain and Katharina Kiderlen, Germany were the first one to drop their double 6-0. 

Number 2 double composed by Lauren Castillon, France, and Maria Raich, Spain had a really good beginning, leading until 4-3 thanks to a lot of consistency from the baseline by Raich and good volleys from Castillon. Unfortunately, the Bull-terriers came back more aggressive and defeated the lions 6-4.

Number 1 double did not find solutions as early as they wanted in the match and were dominated by their opponent and dropped their double 6-1. 

The Lady Lions were now down 1-0 after the doubles but they were ready for another fight as they still had six singles to play.

Playing number 2, senior Pearllan Cipriano did not manage to find solutions against a really aggressive player, Cipriano dropped her match 6-0, 6-0.

#5 Castillon was the second the finish her single, unfortunately, Lauren's solid backhand and volleys were not enough to bother her opponent and lost her match 6-2, 6-2.

Rozados playing number 3 was the third one to finish, after a lot of solid forehand from the baseline, Marta did not manage to find the weakness of her opponent and lost her match 6-1, 6-1.

Maria Raich playing number 4 was the fourth match to finish, after a tight first set Maria lost 6-3. In the second set junior, Raich decided to play more aggressive but still fell short 6-2. 

Senior Fantine Botella # 1 had a different scenario, thanks to a lot of aggressive forehands from the baseline Botella won the first set 6-4. Her opponent came back more aggressive in the second and dominated Botella 6-3. The third set was a super tiebreaker, Botella followed the advice of her coach and held the cross on the forehand. But unfortunately, it wasn't enough and Fantine lost the third set 10-8. 

Playing number 6, junior Victoria Silva had a tight first set as she used a lot of angles, her opponent managed to block all her shots and challenged Silva with a lot of backhand slices. Victoria dropped her match 6-3, 6-0. 

Seniors O'Connor and Kiderlen had the opportunity to play exhibition matches, after a lot of offensive shots from both, Kiderlen lost 8-3 and O'Connor dropped her match 8-4.

The Lady Lions finished the day with a 9-0 loss against Furman. 

Next up, the EC Women's Tennis Team will travel to Hickory, North Carolina on Saturday, February 16th to face Lenoir Rhyne.
