FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Emmanuel College softball team fought hard during their Wednesday evening doubleheader at Emmanuel College, downing the Lady Canes, 2-0, in game one before delivering a 4-3 defeat in the second game.
The Lady Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Crystal Busbee scored on a balk by the Georgia Southwestern pitcher. The Lions added to their lead with a single to left field from Becky Collins in the bottom of the third to give Emmanuel College a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Canes remained scoreless throughout the entire game with help from the Lions defense and sophomore pitcher, Taylor Saxon. Saxon only allowed two hits and threw 51 strikes out of the 72 pitches thrown during the first game.
The Lady Lions remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Noelle Petty produced a sacrifice fly that scored Alexis Costlow from third, making the score 1-1. In the bottom of the fifth inning Mary Baxter doubled into left center, scoring Crystal Busbee giving the Lions a 2-1 lead over the Lady Canes. Georgia Southwestern would go on to score two more runs, one in the top of the sixth, which sent the game into extra innings. Another run was scored in the top of the eighth inning. In the Bottom of the eighth inning Kristin Durden laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Mary Baxter from third. Then sophomore, Alannah Long, stepped up for the Lady Lions with a walk off single into left field that scored the Brianna Morgan, the winning run for the Lady Lions.
Junior, Erin Harden, pitched a good game. She had seven strikeouts and threw 87 strikes out of the 133 pitches that were thrown.
The Lady Lions will be back in action to take on Mount Olive University on March 25, 2017.
