FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmnauel Lions softball team fell to Gerogia Southwestern at home today.
The Lions started with the lead in the first inning when Khelsea Salyers, a freshman, got on base and was then scored by a base hit by Samantha Ely. The Lions held the Lady Canes until the top of the third inning when Rachel McElroy had a base hit to right field. Following her soon after was Keri Tompkins who was able to hit one out of the park to take the game lead 2-1. The score remained the same until the top of the 6th inning. The Canes catcher, Haley Warner, hit a double to left field scoring Savannah Carlisle home when she was put on base by a walk. The Canes continued to lead the game 3-1. Unhappily, the Lady Lions were not able to come back and the Canes took the first win of the night, 3-1.
Leading the game off in the second game, GSW took the lead immediately in the first innning 5 to 0 with 4 base hits and 1 homerun by Haley Warner. The Lions were able to battle back in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Holly Springer and Kalen Callaway were able to get on base by two base hits andthen both being scored by Brittany Abbots base hit shot to bring them both home to make the score now 5-2.
The biggest moment of the game for the Lions was in the bottom of the 4th inning when Jorden Williams was able to draw a walk to get on base. Following her was a senior, Linsey Hearn, who managed to hit a shot as well to put her and Jorden in scoring position. Following Linsey, a sophmore, Halle Cheek steps up to the box. With her heart and mind dertermined, she drilled a shot over the outfield fence for first homerun of her career; which scored Williams and Hearn to make a tie ball game 5-5!
Halle Cheek was asked how it felt hitting the ball over the fence and here was her response: "I hadn't been seeing the ball well for a few games now. I remember coming into the dug out after I struck out in the first game and just saying in my head 'When are you going to cut me a break God?' I was upset and felt like I wasn't contributing to my team. When I hit the homerun, I was shocked and overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with a sence of the Lord's presence with me. You see, my team didn't need a homerun when I wanted it...they needed it when The Lord wanted it. It scored us 3 runs to tie up the game that we were struggling to get back into. I am filled with a since of pride, not for myself, but knowing that I serve a God that blesses me more than I deserve and in His perfect timing. Therefore, to God be the Glory!"
Unforuntaly, the Lions were not able to come back afterwards and the Canes had scored 4 more runs in the top of the 6th and 7th inning, leaving the final score 9-5.
