FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.---The Emmanuel College softball team opened their spring season in shining fashion on Tuesday afternoon when they took on the Truett-McConnell College Bears.

Emmanuel was able to sweep Truett-McConnell in their opening series of play by winning game one 8-0 and game two 5-3.

When asked about going into Tuesday's game against Truett, Coach Alexander stated, "We have been working hard and I feel that we were prepared to play. When our games last weekend were canceled due to snow against North Greenville University, the girls were disappointed and very anxious to play the following Tuesday."

Leah Ritchhart took the mound for the Lions in game one allowing no runs for the Bears. Ritchhart was able to keep the Bears from scoring with phenomenal defense behind her. The Lions defense was able to keep runners off the bases in crutch situation by turning two crucial double plays.

Standouts on offense for the game were freshman Cassie Hall, Senior Sammy Rao, Freshman Mary Catherine Burrell and Senior Hayley Baird. Hall went 1-2 with a homerun and 2 walks. Rao had a solo homerun, Burrell went 1-1 with a double and Baird was also 1-1 at the plate with a double.

Game two proved to be a little more difficult for the Lions. The game was tied 2-2 after four innings until the Lions posted three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to build the 5-2 advantage. Rao went 1-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs as EC recorded 9 hits during the game. Kaitlyn Lawrence pitched all seven innings earning the win allowing TMC just 5 hits.

Emmanuel will be on the road Saturday as they travel to play Limestone College at 1:00 p.m.

The Lady Lions will then be back at home on Monday the 24th for a makeup game against North Greenville University at 3:00 p.m.

Emmanuel will also play Tuesday the 25th at home against Cumberland University; first pitch for that series is set for 3:00 p.m.
