Men's Tennis Wraps up Day 1 of Palmetto Tennis Championships

Sumter, SC. - The Emmanuel College men's tennis team travelled to Sumter, SC for their fall semester Conference Tournament. 10 of the men travelled to play both singles and doubles matches. The draw for singles was divided into 3 groups, with A, B and C draw. The draw for doubles was divided into 2 groups, with an A and B draw.  

In the Men's Singles A draw, Freshman Hassan Badran was unable to defeat his opponent from Limestone with a 3-6, 3-6 defeat. Sophomore Thembo Makhanya had a tough battle against his opponent from Barton College after having been up 4-0 in the second set. Makhanya kept fighting but fell short and lost 5-7, 5-7. Senior, Lucas Sasaki was unable to find a good rhythm when he played his opponent from Belmont and lost.  

In the Men's Singles B draw, the men's team were more successful. Sophomore Kornel Kimagzweski successfully defeated his opponent from Mount Olive after coming back from a 0-3 deficit in the second set. Kimagzweski won 6-4, 6-4. Senior, Juan Carlos Romero was playing a solid first set and was up 4-1 against his opponent from Limestone, until his opponent retired. Another senior, Jorge Canadas started off strong, with a 6-3 win in the first against his opponent from Belmont Abbey, only for his opponent to retire 1-0 down in the second set. Sophomore, Juan Camilo had a tough first round, going three sets against his opponent from Barton. Camilo was down 1-4 in the first set and was able to come back to 4-5 before falling short and losing the first set 4-6. The second set was a different scenario, Camilo started to become more aggressive and drew in closer to volley, winning the second set 7-6. In the third set match tie break, Camilo saved 2 match point with an amazing backhand volley for the first and with solid groundstrokes from the baseline. Unfortunately, in Camilo's second match, he had to retire after narrowly losing the first set 6-7 due to cramps.  

In the Men's Singles C draw, more success started with freshman, Javier Crespo winning comfortably against his opponent from North Greenville, 6-1, 6-0. Junior, Joshua Davis was relentless on the court and didn't allowe his opponent any chances, winning 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore, Mathew Mills was unable to break his opponent's game and lost 4-6, 4-6.  

In the Men's Doubles A Draw, new duo Badran and Camilo were unable to win their match against the Barton duo and lost 3-6.  

In the Men's Doubles B Draw, number 1 seed Sasaki and Makhanya wasted no time with their first-round match and won 6-0 with great volleys from both. In their second round of doubles, the duo won their match 6-3. 

Duo, Davis and Kimagweski were down 1-5, and with big serves from Kimagzweski and killer volleys from Davis, they were able to narrow down the match 4-5. However, it was not enough for them finish as they lost 4-6. Duo three consisting of Canadas and Crespo struggled in the beginning and lost 2-6.  

The Men's team will continue action today at the Palmetto Tennis Championships.
