Men's Tennis Fall to Lenoir-Rhyne

Hickory, NC. -The Emmanuel College Men's Tennis Team had their second match of the season against Lenoir Rhyne University on Saturday, February 16th. After a lot of tight matches, the Lions fell to their opponent, 4-3.

The EC Lions stepped on the court with a motivated attitude this Saturday, as they knew that a tough match was ahead of them. In most of the matches the scores were incredibly tight and the suspense was very high. Unfortunately, the Lions were not able to overcome on all the courts and were defeated by the Bears 4-3.

In doubles #3, composed by Thembokwakhe Makhanya and Juan Camilo Burgos, both freshmen, faced solid opponents and did not manage to defeat their opponents, and Burgos and Makhanya dropped their doubles, 6-3.

Doubles #1 composed of Juan Carlos Romero and Enrique Alcacer also faced some difficulties against their solid opponents and dropped their double 6-3.

Unfortunately for doubles #2, Jorge Canadas and Lucas Sasaki were not able to finish their match as double 1 and 3 already clinched the match. Canada and Sasaki had to stop at 5-4.

The Lions were now down 1-0 after the doubles but did not give up and were ready to give everything for their singles.

Playing number 6 in the line-up was Joshua Davis who struggled to find solutions against a strong opponent and was defeated 6-0, 6-0.

Number 4 single was played by Juan Camilo Burgos who had a tough beginning and dropped the first set 6-1. The second set was a different story as Burgos changed his game and started to be more confident with his shots. But after a tight second set, Juan Camilo lost his match 6-1, 7-5.

Singles #5 was played by Thembokwakhe Makhanya who also had a tough beginning as he dropped the first set 6-4. Makhanya came back stronger in the second set and adopted a different strategy which led him to win in three sets with the score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The Lions were now down by 3-1 but there were still 3 matches left.

The second player that brought a point for the team was Juan Carlos Romero playing number 1 in the line-up. Romero had a tight first set and went to a tiebreaker that he won thanks to his consistency and aggressive shots. The second set was a loss for Juan Carlos but he recovered the next set, winning his match 7-6, (8-6), 6-3.

For the single number 3 played by Lucas Sasaki, the scenario was similar. After a tight first set, Sasaki also went to a tiebreaker. Thanks to a lot of aggressive shots and points at the net Lucas won the tiebreaker 8-6. The second set was also tight but Sasaki already knew the weaknesses of his opponent and he used it to finish the match with a score of 7-6, (8-6), 6-4.

The score was now 3-3 and there was only one match left.

Jorge Canadas playing number 5 was the last match still playing and kept the suspense until the end. Jorge faced a solid opponent and had a tight fight, unfortunately his consistency was not enough for today's match as his opponent was ending most of the points at the net. After a long fight Canadas was defeated with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

The Lions finished the day with a 4-3 loss against Lenoir-Rhyne University.

EC Tennis Team will travel to Greenwood, South Carolina next Wednesday, February 20th to take on Lander University, a Division 2 school from the Peach Belt Conference.
