GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- The Emmanuel College swimming teams competed at the fourth annual Brenau University Invitational November 21-22. The multi-session competition was held at the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center.
The meet began on Friday night and concluded the following evening. There were a total of 36 events throughout the three sessions during two days of competition. The invitational hosted ten women's teams and six men's teams. EC swimmers compete in a total of 40 individual events and 20 relays for a total of 120 races.
The Lions started strong on Friday night by opening up the meet with competitive swims in the 200 Free Relay. The women's "A" relay (Tobo, Gratz, Whitaker, Gonzalez) finished eleventh with a 1:48.53. Tobo's lead off 50 free time of 26.42 was the first EC school record of the meet. The men's "A" relay (Mendoza, Aguilar, Reichenbach, Nicholson) placed seventh with a time of 1:32.23.
Following the relays on Friday night (for the women) Laura Gonzalez finished 10th in the 500 free with a personal best time of 5:39.04. Diana Tobo finished 7th in the 200 IM (2:16.52).
Following the relays on Friday night (for the men) Santiago Aguilar finished 1st in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:53.91. Camilo Mendoza finished 1st in the 200 IM (1:54.01) with a new EC school record. Freshmen Andrew Reichenbach finished 8th in a person best 200 IM time of 2:02.57.
The Lions continued to excel on Saturday. In the morning session, the women's "A" 200 Medley Relay (Tobo, Gratz, Gonzalez, Wright) finished11th in 2:04.51. The men's "A" 200 Medley Relay (Reichenbach, Rowe,Aquilar, Mendoza) finished 4th in 1:38.96.
Following the relays (for the women) Laura Gonzalez finished 2nd in the 100 Fly (59.55) and Diana Tobo finished 2nd in the 100 Fly (59.72). Both season best times for the Lady Lions. Finishing out the morning session the 800 Free Relay (Tobo, Gonzalez, Whitaker, Gratz) finished 8th in8:39.56, smashing the previous school record by 14 seconds.
Following the relays (for the men) Camilo Mendoza finished 1st in the 400 IM with a new EC record time of 4:04.65. Just missing the NCAA Div. II national cut by .o4 seconds. David Rabern Finish 10th in the same event (5:17.24). In the 100 Fly Santiago Aguilar finished 1st in a season best time of 52.27. In the 200 Free Camilo Mendoza finished 1st in 1:44.70 for another EC school record. In the 100 Breast Clement Rowe finished 2nd1:00.54 and Andrew Reichenbach 5th 1:02.20. Finishing out the morning session the 800 Free Relay of (Mendoza, Aguilar, Reichenbach, Nicholson) finished 5th in 7:34.26.
In the final session of the meet on Saturday afternoon, Top 10 performances for the Lady Lions included the 100 Free by Savannah Gratz, finishing 10th in a personal best time of 58.20. The 200 Back ofDiana Tobo 1st place in 2:05.86, breaking her own school record by 3 seconds, and the 200 Fly by Laura Gonzalez, finishing 4th in a personal best time of 2:13.05. Finally, the 400 Free Relay (Tobo, Whitaker, Gratz, Wright) finished 7th in 3:59.08. Senior, Justine Wright anchored this relay in her final event as a Lady Lion Swimmer.
Top 10 performances for the men included the 200 Back of Santiago Aguilar finishing 5th in 2:02.96 and Andrew Reichenbach finishing 7th in2:06.44. The 200 Breast of Camilo Orrego 1st in 2:07.64 (new EC school record) and Andrew Reichenbach finishing 9th in a personal best time of2:23.03. In the 200 Fly Santiago Aguilar finished 1st in a winning time of1:56.82, for his third 1st place finish of the meet. Finally, the
400 Free Relay (Reichenbach, Aguilar, Orrego, Fountain) finished 6th in a season best time of 3:22.92.
The Lions will be back in action December 31-January 6 as they travel to Stuart Florida for the 79th Annual College Swimming Forum Competition, at the Martin County Aquatics Athletic Center.
