Gwaltney's Overtime Goal Gives Lions Victory Over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Emmanuel College men's soccer team defeated Newberry College 2-1 on Wednesday night. This win brings the Lions record to 8-4-1 overall, 4-2-1 in conference. 

25 minutes into the game, Shane Cronin crossed the ball from 25 yards out to set up Jeremy Gwaltney with the first goal of the game. The Lions held off 9 shots from their opponent to end the first half with the lead.

The Lions found themselves on the defense when the second half commenced. Newberry fired a total of 14 shots while containing the Lions to just 2. With under five minutes left to play, Newberry's Tarek Malz scored off of a header to tie the game 1-1. The final minutes ticked away forcing the game into overtime. 

After a scoreless first overtime, the Lions finally found their Opportunity in the 104th minute. Jeremy Gwaltney capitalized on a ball that was deflected off the crossbar, firing in his second goal of the game and capturing the victory for EC.

Next up, the Lions travel to Barton College on Saturday, October 26th to continue conference play.
