Lions Claim Conference Win with 22-17 Victory Over Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Emmanuel College men's lacrosse team held off a late rally to take down the Hawks of Chowan University in Conference Carolinas play 22-17.

It was Alex Stull who would find the net first off the pass from Matthew Mitchell to give the Lions an early start. Chowan answered with a three goal run to take the lead with 9:17 left in the first quarter. Mitchell and Allan Velasquez would score to even the score back to 3-3 with 8-minutes left. As the clock closed in on 2-minutes, Velasquez scored two more to complete a first quarter hat-trick. The scoring was not done for the Lions as Madison Hunter Phillips took one all the way down for the long stick goal. Shamaz Durrant claimed his first of the game with 42-seconds left in the opening quarter. The Hawks would answer with a late goal with 26-seconds showing on the board. In the final seven seconds of the opening quarter, Alec Ammons would launch the ball down field to find Stull who found an open Mitchell to score as time expired. Emmanuel finished the opening quarter up 8-4.

In the second quarter, it took two Chowan goals and 10-minutes before Kylon Collins put one in for the Lions. Velasquez, Durrant, and Stull would each collect more for their total on the day with two minutes left in the half. A goal by Chowan would close the gap to 12-8 with 1:26 before the break. Again, the Lions pushed for theatrics as Durrant found Mitchell for a goal with 27-seconds left in the half. Going into the halftime break the Lions were on top 13-8.

Chowan came out of the break with a four goal run to come within one of the Lions with 4:20 left in the quarter. The teams would go goal-for-goal through the buzzer as the Lions held off the Hawks to close the quarter with Lance Olson claiming one in the final minute, EC leading 16-14.

The Lions would start the fourth quarter man-up and Mitchell would score his fifth of the contest. Almost a minute later, he found Stull to give EC a four goal lead. The Lions would not let up and outscore the Hawks 4-3 in the closing minutes of the contest. Emmanuel left the field 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play with the win over Chowan 22-17.

Standout Performance

Matthew Mitchell was a highlight factory with seven goals and five assists against the Hawks.

Gavin White had a day at the face-off X going 60% on the day.

The EC man-up squad finished at 75%, capitalizing on 3 of 4 man-up opportunities.
