Men's Basketball Holds Off Lander in Home Opener

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College men's basketball team defeated Lander University, 70-68 in their home opener on Wednesday night.

Lander would be the first to put points up on the board before Junior Tyonn Stuckey responded for the Lions with a three-pointer. What ensued next was a back and forth battle with both teams fighting for the lead. With just over three minutes left in the first half, Sophomore Isaiah Foster would hit a three-pointer to pull the Lions ahead 29-27. Senior Emerson McClung would add on to the Lions lead before a huge dunk from Freshman Eric Jones got the crowd going. Freshman Kelvin Jones would put up a final three-pointer for the Lions to secure the half-time lead.

When returning to the court, the teams continued exchanging points, experiencing 28 lead changes and 10 ties by the end of the night. The Lions finally began to see some stability with ten minutes left to play. Kelvin Jones would go to the line and hit three free-throws to give EC a 53-51 lead. Sophomore Michael Wright would further extend the lead with back to back layups and a free throw. Lander would have a last minute push to get within two points of the Lions, but EC would hold them off and capture the win, 70-68.

The Lions shot 42.1% from the field. While the Bearcats out-rebounded the Lions 42-28, EC capitalized on Lander mistakes to put up 13 points off turnovers.

Senior Emerson McClung led the Lions with 15 points, putting his career total points over 1000.
