Lions Even Conference Record with Double Header Sweep
DUE WEST, S.C.- The Lions Baseball team traveled to Due West, SC to face conference opponent Erskine College over the weekend. With game one being cancelled by rain the series was shortened to a double header on Saturday.
The Fleet jumped out to a quick four run lead after the first two innings. In the third inning the Lion offense would start chipping away. Demetrius Foster would lead off the inning with a single and move to third on Brock Baughcums double down the right field line. Both runners would come around to score on back to back groundouts. In the top of the fourth inning the Lion offense would push across three runs to take the lead. The Flying Fleet would push across the only run they would score off Colton Bridges to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. With one out in the sixth, back to back singles by Foster and Baughcum put runners at the corners. After Baughcum stole second base to put two runners in scoring position Jake Nichols poked a single into centerfield to regain the lead. Bridges continued his excellent performance on the mound over the final two innings to seal the win for the Lions.

Looking for the two game series sweep the Lions sent Bryson Cornett to the mound to match up with the Ace of the Fleet staff. Erskine would take an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. The lead was short lived as Demetrius Foster would answer with a long homerun to right field, his first of the season. Leading off the fifth inning Brandon Taylor reached on an error by the shortstop. Taylor would make his way around the bases on a passed ball, stolen base and another error on the short stop. With Foster at second base Baughcum singled to right to push across another run. Jake Nichols followed with a single and both runners stole a base to put runners at second and third. Baughcum would touch home on Quinn Tomasinos ground out to extend the lead to 4-1. Jorge Villalobos sparked the offense again in the sixth with a lead off single and stole second base to set up another scoring opportunity. With two strikes Brandon Taylor delivered an RBI single to right field and pushed the lead to four runs. The Flying Fleet would get their second run of the game off Cornett in the seventh before reliever Kyle Heuchert would shut down the threat with a strikeout and groundout to third. Cody Waters would come on to pitch the bottom of the ninth to protect a three run lead. With two outs and a runner at first an error allowed the tying run to come to the plate. The Fleet batter hit a ball to the gap in right center that appeared would end the game until the fielder lost his footing in the wet conditions and allowed two runs to cross the plate and put the tying run at third base. With the game on the line Waters got a called strike three to end the game and give the Lions the win and series sweep.
