Baseball Kicks Off Season at Home, 3-1

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel Lions Baseball team opened its 2019 campaign this weekend at home against Salem University and Georgia Southwestern.  In the first game of the weekend EC sent out Senior right hander Cooper Murphy to face the Salem Tigers.  Salem was able to scratch across a pair of runs in the second to take an early lead.  Seniors, Brock Baughcum and Jake Nichols would get the Lion offense moving with a pair of walks to lead of the third inning and come home to tie the game on Quinn Tomasino's single.  Later in the third Jacob Saulnier would put the Lions up for good as he singled home two more runners to take a 4 – 2 lead.  Over the next 5 frames Emmanuel would plate four more runs and win the game 8-4 as Senior Cody Waters closed out the game with his first save of the season.

In the nightcap against Georgia Southwestern, Emmanuel would again fall behind early as GSW posted two runs in the top of the first.  Junior Kyle Gaura cut the lead in half when he sent a 3-0 fastball over the left center wall for a long homerun, his first of the season. In the bottom of the third the Lion offense pushed in three runs after a bases loaded walk and a two RBI double by Brandon Taylor.  The Hurricanes regained the lead in the top of the fourth as they touched up EC starter Livan Cordova for three more runs.  After solo runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings GSW found themselves holding an 8 – 4 lead over the Lions.  With two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh Dustin McNicholl connected on the first pitch he saw and sent a double over the center fielders head to cut the lead to 8 – 6.  Looking to keep the game at a two run deficit the Lions called on Freshman Trey Campbell out of the pen.  He was up to the task and retired the side allowing on a weak single through the infield. Brock Baughcum singled and with two outs stole second to get into scoring position.  After the stolen base Tomasino would beat out an infield single and Baughcum would come around to score on the play.  Back to back singles by Jorge Villalobos and Kyle Gaura would tie the game at eight runs a piece for Jacob Saulnier.  Saulnier hit a deep fly ball to left field that was almost caught by the left fielder as he crashed into the wall.  The inside the park homerun would give the Lions the lead for Cody Waters to close out in the ninth.  Waters made quick work in the ninth as he set the Hurricanes down in order recording his second save of the day.

Saturdays double header would start with a contest against Emmanuel and Georgia Southwestern.  The Southwestern offense came out strong in their second matchup with the Lions. Taking advantage of defensive miscues and free passes the Hurricanes mounted a 14 – 1 lead through seven innings. The Lions offense tried to mount a rally but found the thirteen run lead to much to over come as they fell short 14 – 7. The Lion defense committed 5 errors leading to 6 unearned runs while 3 of the 10 walks came around to score.

Looking to recover from the Game 1 loss the Lions sent Senior Bryson Cornett out to the mound.  After cruising through the first inning he would get all the run support he would need in the bottom of the first as Jake Nichols blasted a two run homer over the left center field wall.  Salem cut the lead in half in the top of the second before Demetrius Foster's two RBI single extended the lead to 4 – 1.  In the top of the fifth Salem would again cut the lead in half.  Single runs in the fifth and sixth would extend the lead to 6 – 2.  With the game still close Adam Biss emerged from the Lion bullpen and pitch two scoreless innings.  Kyle Gaura led off the seventh inning with his second home run of the season.  Later in the same inning Foster singled home his third run of the inning.  The offense would cap off the eighteen hit game with Dustin McNicholl's two RBI triple to right center field in the eighth.  Biss would give way to Cody Waters for his third game of the weekend as he would finish off the Lions third win of the weekend.
