FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College Women's Wrestling team competed in the first day of the WCWA National tournament on Feb. 9.
Preliminary rounds were held at 10 a.m., with championship and consolation to AA rounds held at 4 p.m. Championship semis and consolation quarters were held at 7 p.m.
Results from the first day put Emmanuel College in third place in team scores with a total of 124 points. The team also has two finalists and four wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket.
In the finals round, which will take place on the mat at 5 p.m. Saturday, Cody Pfau and Maria Vidales will wrestle against each other for the 109 weight class. Pfau went into the tournament at number one in the weight class with Vidales at number three.
Pfau wrestled Jessica Rodriguez from the University of the Cumberlands in the quarterfinals round and won 10-0. She moved on to win 4-0 over Jessica Dehart from Eastern Oregon University in the semifinals.
Vidales won her quarterfinals round 10-0 against Katlyn Pizzo from Campbellsville University W. She went on to the semifinals to beat Charlotte Fowler from Campbellsville University W by a score of 5-2.
This kept Pfau at number one on the bracket and placed Vidales at number two, resulting in an all Emmanuel College finals round in the 109 weight class.
Washington lost 5-0 in the 101 weight class quarterfinals round to King University W's Marina Doi.
Encinas represented Emmanuel in the 116 weight class and won the quarterfinals round 10-0 against Jennifer Juarez from Life University W. She moved on to lose the semifinals 2-0 against Abby Llyod from Simon Fraser University.
Nette won 10-0 in the 123 weight class quarterfinals round against Breanna Dudoit-vasquez from Wayland Baptist University. She then went on to wrestle Dominique Parrish from Simon Fraser University in the semifinals round and lost 10-4.
Marano represented Emmanuel in the 143 weight class quarterfinals round against Shamera Mctier from Missouri Valley College and won 5-2. She then went to the semifinals to wrestle Alexis Porter from McKendree University and lost 3-1.
