Women’s Volleyball Suffers Tough Loss To Anderson

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The women's volleyball team lost 1-3 against a talented Trojan team.

The lions had a poor performance in the first set, only putting in 8 kills to the Trojans 16. With a hitting percentage of .138, they let the first set slip by 25-15.

The ladies began to improve play in the second set, with a more polished looking offense. Still, the match was won by the Trojans 25-20.

Finally in the third set, Emmanuel took charge. Senior Nikki Kraning went on a six serve run, while Junior Jessica Gray unloaded with 4 kills. Despite momentum on their side, the lead would briefly slip away half way through the set.  Facing a 1 point deficit at 17-18, Emmanuel had another impressive five point run to take a commanding 4 point lead. The Lions would finish off the set with a kill from Gray with a score of 25-22.

The fourth set was a back and forth battle for both teams. With a tied score of 16-16, Senior Julie de Blanck fired a powerful shot right down the center of the court, giving Emmanuel the lead and much needed momentum. Junior Gabby Ghassedi followed up with an ace. After several more exchanges, the Lions were in position to win with match point. The Trojans called a timeout then returned with a big kill from Kaitlyn Grube. A kill from Sophomore Jenna Woodruff, along with an attack error from the Trojans once again put Emmanuel at match point with a score of 26-25. Unable to finish, Anderson would go on a three point run to take the set 28-26.

In one of their higher scoring matches, the Lions were led by Jessica Gray with 16 kills, followed by Julie de Blanck with 13. Junior Stephanie Hardy tallied 43 assists.

The Lions will resume action on Tuesday, September 11th with their first conference match of the season when they take on Erskine College on the road.
