Women's Volleyball Opens Season With Two Sweeps

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team kicked off their 2018 season with two quick sweeps on Friday at the Coker/FMU 2018 Fall Invitational.

The Lions had a slow start in the first set of their season opener against Virginia Union University, but steadily found their rhythm midway through. After trailing by 3 points, senior Julie de Blanck had a heavy kill, motivating the Lions to go on a 4 point run. From that point on, the Lions never trailed and went on to take the match 25-17, 25-12, 25-9. The ladies commanded the match with 44 kills and a .323 hitting percentage.

Senior Julie de Blanck led the offense with 14 kills and 3 aces, as junior Jessica Gray followed behind with 9 kills.

In the evening portion of the Coker/FMU 2018 Fall Invitational, the Lions had another dominant performance over Winston-Salem State University.

Carrying over their momentum from the first win, the Lions cruised to an easy first and second set win with the same score of 25-11. While the third set saw the Rams with their best performance of the night, they still couldn't measure up to the dominant Emmanuel offense. The Lions went on to take the third set 25-15.

Jessica Gray delivered 11 kills, while Senior Julie de Blanck dished out 4 aces.

The Emmanuel women's volleyball team will continue action tomorrow as the tournament continues with games against the University of Indianapolis and Catawba College at 9am and 5pm respectively.
