Hewell Runs to All American in the 10k!

Friday's events of the NCCAA Track & Field Championships is complete and the Lions are off to a great start!

The day began with the men qualifying for the finals of the 4 x 100 meter relay which will be held on Saturday.  Ryan Armstead, Michael Guinn, Dikerrio Ramsey, and Tamarick Watson made up the four athletes on the relay team.
Deja Barthell had a breakout performance in the triple jump with a new personal best jump of 10.99 meters, placing her seventh place overall!  She also had a great run in the 100 meter dash with a new personal best time.
Dikerrio Ramsey had a very busy day of preliminaries, running a leg of the 4x100, the open 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash.  He also competed in the triple jump and made the finals for all four events!  He finished the triple jump in fourth place and will compete Saturday for the rest of his events.
Capping off day one of the championships was Makayla Hewell in the 10,000 meter run.  She started with a conservative pace, running very smart and extremely patient.  She worked her way from being in the middle of the pack at the start, into fourth place where she had a large gap to make up on second and third place.  Makayla little by little closed the gap on third place taking over the final All American spot, finishing her third ever sub-40 minute 10k and third in the country!
