The Second Annual Susan Rouse Invitational hosted by Southern Wesleyan University in Central, South Carolina was on Saturday and more school records were set despite extreme wind gusts and unseasonably cool temperatures.
Freshman Makayla Hewell started the day off setting a new record for Emmanuel College in the 5k, running 18:40 and finishing second in the race. She also earned her spot at the NCCAA Championships in that event, making it the second event she has qualified to compete in. Makayla followed up her second place 5k performance with a strong run in the 3,000 meter run later in the day, winning that event with a time of 11:09.
Senior Samantha Cortese had a very strong showing in shot and discus. In the shotput, Samantha won with a throw of 39 feet, 7 inches. She came back later in the afternoon to win the discus with a throw of 120 feet, 8 inches. Sam has now qualified for nationals in both events!
Senior Jazmin Konnick was a new qualifier this weekend, earning the right to compete in the 800 meter run and placing second overall with a time of 2:20.64. Jazmin joins fellow mid-distance senior teammate Gabby Hill who qualified in the 100 meter dash the week before in Daytona Beach.
The Lions will wrap up the regular season at Appalachian State University on April 30th and see if they can better their performances even more before the NCCAA Championships in Rome, Georgia on May 13th and 14th.
