Greenwood, SC. — On Tuesday, the Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team traveled to Lander University and made history by defeating the Bearcats for the first time with a score of 4-3.
After 2 weeks without competition due to weather, the Lady Lions made an impressive comeback.
Double #1 played by seniors Chloe O'Connor and Fantine Botella did not have any problem during their match as they dominated their opponent. Thanks to a lot of pouching and consistency, the duo won 6-2.
Double #2 followed the path of double 1 as they finished a few minutes after. Thanks to a lot of pouching from Pearllan Cipriano and aggressive backhands from Lauren Castillon, the duo defeated their opponents 6-2.
Double #3 composed by Katharina Kiderlen and Marta Rozados had a tougher match as it was tight from the beginning until the end. Unfortunately, because of a lot of aggressive volleys from their opponents, the duo did not manage to conclude and lost 7-5.
After the doubles, the Lady Lions were now up 1-0 and were ready to give everything for their singles.
Playing number 3 single was the freshman Marta Rozados who had a tough beginning, after being down 5-0, the freshman came back to 5-2 before losing the first set 6-2. In the second set, Marta started to be more consistent but was not able to conclude the points because of her opponent's game style who was more consistent. After a tough fight, Rozados dropped her match 6-2 6-3.
Number 2 single was Pearllan Cipriano who also had a tough beginning, after being down 4-0, Cipriano won 6 games in a row which gave her the first set. Second set Pearllan was also down and once again won 5 games in a row which lead her to a 5-2 to finally conclude 6-4 6-3.
#4 single was played by Maria Raich who thanks to a consistent and aggressive game style managed to dominate her opponent. Maria found solutions early in the game as she was avoiding the middle as much as possible to avoid the attacks of her opponent. After dominating her opponent, the whole match Raich defeated her opponent 6-3 6-2.
Number 1 single played by senior Fantine Botella was a tough match as Botella's opponent was really consistent. Thanks to her patience and an aggressive game style Fantine managed to always stay tight in the score. After dropping the first set 7-6, Botella was led by 4-0 in the second set, then came back to 4-4 and finally dropped her match 7-6 6-4.
Playing number 5 was the freshman Lauren Castillon who had a good beginning of the match as she won the first set 6-3. In the second set, her opponent brought her level higher and started to be more consistent at the baseline and Castillon started to miss more. Lauren dropped her match 3-6 6-3 6-3.
Victoria Silva playing number 6 singles was the last one playing, the team needed her last point to defeat the Bearcats. After winning the first set without any difficulties, Silva unconsciously changed her game style as she wanted to rush which led her opponent to win the second set. In the third set Victoria was more confident and thanks to a smart play and patience, she led the team to the victory thanks to her win 6-1 1-6 6-3.
The Lady Lions finished the day with a 4-3 win against Lander University.
EC's Women's Tennis Team be hosting their first match of the season on Friday 15th against Georgia College.
