Lady Lions Tennis Team continues success at the PTC

Sumter, SC - The Lions opened the second day at the Palmetto Tennis Center at 8AM. Botella/O'Connor started the day off playing a cross-town rival from Southern Wesleyan, Ball/Rodriquez. The Lady Lions dispatched their foes with a combination of powerful down-the-line forehands from Botella and smart poaches at the net from O'Connor for a final score of (8-4). Later in the day, Botella/O'Connor faced Smolchenkova/Tarlouskaya from Chowan. Opening the match with a quick start, the Lady Lions went up (5-0), to eventually finish it out (8-5). Cipriano/Silva played at the same time against Dorn/Nguyen from Belmont Abbey. The Lady Lions dominated the court and closed the match quickly with an (8-2) finish. Cipriano/Silva played their second double match of the day against Avram/Stevenson from Barton. The match started off close, both teams serve until (4-4). The Lady Lions were able grab two important breaks to clinch the match (8-4).

In singles play, Fantine Botella faced Sonja Gaertner from Mt. Olive. After a quick first set won by the Lady Lion, Gaertner rallied in the second set until (5-5). Botella broke Gaertner's serve and closed the match (6-1), (7-5). In Botella's second match of the day, she faced Polina Novachuk from Chowan. Botella dropped the first set, but found her game in the second. After a tough battle and more smart decisions from Botella, the Lady Lion came out on top to take the match to a third set tie-breaker. Holding the forehand cross and being patient for the right ball, Botella defeated Novachuk (3-6), (7-5), (10-4). Victoria Silva faced the same opponent at Botella, Polina Novachuk, earlier in the day. Despite having played well, Novachuk was able to overcome the Lady Lion (6-0), (6-2). Pearllan Cipriano faced Steffi Kong from Converse in her first singles match of the day. Cipriano was able to close the set quickly. The second set proved a little more difficult for the Lady Lion, but she came out on top in the end (6-0), (6-4). In her second match of the day, Cipriano faced her long-time-rival Marissa Stevenson from Barton. Cipriano won the first set with her unfailing consistency early in the match. Stevenson made less unforced errors in the second set, but the Lady Lion was able to defeat Stevenson (6-2), (6-4). Maria Raich faced Vanessa Alvarez from Barton. The Lady Lion fought hard, but Alvarez defeated her in the end for a score of (6-2), (6-3). Chloe O'Connor cruised for two rounds with quick wins against Ruby Kubac from Limestone (6-0), (6-2), and Erika Noblett from Belmont Abbey (6-1), (6-2). 

 

The EC Women's Tennis Team will be back in action at 8AM on Sunday for the final rounds of the tournament.
