FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College women's basketball team defeated Belmont Abbey College on Tuesday night, 58-53, earning the title of Co-Conference Carolinas Regular Season Champions. Barton College also posted a 16-4 conference record to share the title alongside the Lions.
The Ladies started off hot in one of their most dominant first quarters of the season. The Lions combined for 22 points while holding the Crusaders to just 4 points. Despite being outscored by one point in the second quarter, Emmanuel still held a hefty lead at halftime, 33-16.
After halftime, the Crusaders returned with a completely different team, posting a 57.1% field goal percentage with 23 points. This time the Lions were the ones struggling to convert their shots, putting up just 7 points. Still, Emmanuel held the lead by 1 point at the end of the third quarter.
Sixteen seconds into the final quarter, the Crusaders took their first lead at 41-40. Thirty seconds later, Taylor Delasbour had her opportunity to take the lead right back by sinking both of her free throws. The Lions would hold the lead for the remainder of the night, finishing with a final score of 58-53.
Despite being out rebounded 49-26, the Lions had 10 more steals and 12 less turnovers than their opponent.
Next up, No. 1 Lions will host No. 8 North Greenville University on Monday, March 4th at 5:30pm for the Conference Carolinas Tournament Quarterfinals.
