Women's Basketball Starts Off Season with Win Over Queens

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Emmanuel College Lady Lions took on the Queens University Royals in their first home game of the season. The Lady Lions started off behind, but soon caught up to gain a lead in the second half leading to a win over the Royals. The final score of the game was 62-76.

Leading in scoring for the Lady Lions was #32 Marina Moreno Bendala with a total of 20-points during only twenty minutes of the game. Second to that was #31 Hanna Grogan, who scored 10-points in her fourteen minutes of play time. Leading in defensive rebounds was starting #44 Avery Scarbrough and leading in total rebounds was #32 Marina Moreno Bendala.

The Lady Lions had a slow start in the first quarter, but Avery Scarbrough put up the first 2-points for the team with a layup. Marina Moreno Bendala entered the game and scored her first 2-points of the season followed by Sydney Nash. At the end of the first, the Lady Lions were trailing 16-8. They were able to make a comeback during the second quarter with two huge blocks by Hope Forrester and two 3-pointers by Marina Moreno Bendala. The Lady Lions were up by one, 29-30, going into halftime.

Starting off the second half, Lochlain Corliss started off the scoring with a layup. Taylor Delasbour soon followed and made a 3-point jump shot to start working on gaining a nice lead on the Royals. Jenesai Mohommad made a layup, then Avery Scarbrough made two free throws after being fouled. Hanna Grogan entered the game and put up 10-points to close the third quarter. The Lady Lions were up 36-54 going into the fourth. The Royals played full-court press against the Lady Lions, but Marina Moreno Benadala made her way through the blockage to put up 6-points. Ajah Taylor and Ashlyn Loudermilk ended the game for the Lady Lions with back-to-back scores for the rest of the quarter. The final dagger that put the Lady Lions up 62-76 was by Emily Dreslinski with six seconds left on the clock.

The Lady Lions now hold an overall record of 1-0. Their next game will be Tuesday November 14th at home against Young Harris. The game will begin at 6:00 PM.
