Lady Lions Split with Barton College

WILSON, N.C. – The Emmanuel College softball team fought hard during their Sunday doubleheader against the Barton University Bulldogs. The Lions downed the Bulldogs 5-4 in the first game but lost a close one 1-3 in the second game.

 

GAME ONE

The Lady Lions took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Mary Baxter singled to left field scoring Meredith Reece from second. The Bulldogs rallied back in the bottom of the fourth inning making the score 1-3.  The Lady Lions came back in the top of the fifth inning when Crystal Busbee doubled down left field line scoring Kristin Durden and Meredith Reece. Mary Baxter then singled up the middle scoring Halle Cheek from third. This big inning brought the Lions lead to 5-3.  The Bulldogs tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh inning but their efforts were stopped by the Lions defense resulting in a 5-4 win for the Lady Lions.

Taylor Saxon pitched a great game, striking out seven and throwing 84 strikes out of the 120 pitches that were thrown. 

GAME TWO

Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Bulldogs scored a run on a throwing error. The Lady Lions answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning when Alannah Long singled down the left field line scoring Alexis Costlow. In the bottom of the seventh inning Megan Kelly hit a walk off two run homer for the Lady Bulldogs, ultimately defeating the Lady Lions with a score of 1-3.

Erin Harden pitched a good game, striking out seven batters.

The Lady Lions will be back in action to take on Belmont Abbey College on March 31, 2017.
