Burgamy Holds on to Win Season Opener

The Lions kick off the cross country season at Montreat College on this brisk September Saturday morning.  Emmanuel joined five other teams at Howard Fisher Memorial Field in Black Mountain, North Carolina for the 5k opener.  The course was a somewhat messy and ran a little slower than usual due to heavy rain two days before, but it didn't stop the teams from showing toughness over the 5,000 meters.

Redshirt Freshman, Jacob Burgamy started off his season and college career with a win!  After battling some injuries his last year of high school and first year of college, Jacob made a strong debut holding off a very talented Brien Lancaster of Montreat College to edge out the victory by three tenths of a second.  "I'm incredibly proud of Jacob's determination to battle through injury and come back healthy this year!" praised Coach Hall.  "He is a very talented athlete, but his work ethic and desire is what directs and elevates his talent.
The Lions put four runners in the top ten, and all five within the top 15.  Jose Diaz, Urias Velasquez, and Juwan Lamar earned top ten honors alongside Jacob, and Madison Duggan rounded out Emmanuel's top five placing 14th overall.  Coach Hall had this to say about the morning, "I'm not terribly concerned about times this morning since the course conditions weren't going to allow for fast times.  Today I wanted to see how we ran as a team, how we could push one another along to greater performances by working up in a group, and I wanted to see how tough we could be.  I think we have room for improvement, but we're off to a good start!"

The Lions will have next weekend off and pick up at Winthrop University on September 17th.
