LORETTO, Pa. - The Emmanuel College men's volleyball team kicked off their season with three matches at the Red Flash Invitational in Loretto, Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday.
The tournament started with a tough matchup against NCAA D1 St. Francis University in their season opener on Friday night. St. Francis put down 16 more kills than the Lions en route to their 3-0 sweep. Emmanuel struggled at the net, hitting .056%. Despite being outdone offensively, the Lions totaled 11 blocks, just one short of their opponent. St. Francis went on to win the match 25-22, 25-16, 25-21.
Emmanuel returned to the court on Saturday with a match against Alderson Broaddus. This time the Lions had much more success at the net with a .311 hitting percentage. The Lions put down 49 kills, led by Junior Don Thompson's 15 kills and Freshman Jomar Mondestin's 14. The Lions also excelled over their opponent at blocking with 13 total blocks compared to the Battlers 8.
The final matchup came on Saturday night against Daemen College. After trailing 2-0, Emmanuel fought back and took the next three consecutive sets to close out the match 3-2. Mondestin led the Lions with 16 kills.
After concluding weekend matches, the Lions bring their record to 2-1. Emmanuel will return to the court on Saturday, January 19th with a home game against Brewton-Parker.
