Central, SC. — On Tuesday afternoon, the Emmanuel College Men's Tennis Team had their Conference opener against Southern Wesleyan University. The Lions dominated the Warriors with a 6-1 win.
The Emmanuel Men's Tennis Team had the right mindset when they stepped on the court for their conference opener. Despite missing a full week of practice because of the bad weather, the Lions defeated their opponent without any difficulties.
Double #2 composed by Juniors Jorge Canadas, Spain and Lucas Sasaki, Brazil did not have any trouble against their opponent. Both juniors did not leave any chances for the other team to score and won their double 6-0
Double #1 composed by senior Enrique Alcacer and Juan Carlos Romero had a different scenario. Faced against solid opponents, after a lot of solid groundstrokes and offensive volleys, the duo dropped their double 6-3.
Double #3 did not play as the opponents did not have enough players. The Lions were now up 1-0 after the doubles and were ready to give everything in their singles.
Playing number 3 singles was freshman Kornel Kimagzewski who was playing his first match of the season. Kornel had a tight match from the beginning until the end, thanks to a lot of consistency from the baseline and aggressive groundstroke Kimagzewski managed to defeat his opponent. After winning the first set 6-4, his opponent was not ready to give up, but Kornel kept going strong and defeated his opponent 7-6 (8-6) in the second set.
Single number 2 was played by freshman Thembokwakhe Makhanya who also had a tight match, after winning the first set without any difficulties, his opponent came back. Thembokwakhe had to face a more offensive game from his opponent and dropped the second set 6-4. Starting the third set, Makhanya used his consistency and patience to dominate his opponent. The freshman finished his match with a win by 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Number 1 single was played by junior Juan Carlos Romero who had a tougher match with a different scenario. Romero's opponent was playing really aggressive in the first set and challenging our Lion. After losing the first set 6-4, Juan Carlos came back in the second set using a lot of aggressive shots and managed to win the second set. The third set was now decisive, unfortunately, Juan Carlos aggressive game was not enough to dominate his opponent and dropped his match by 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
Playing number 4 single was Lucas Sasaki who won his match without any difficulties, after using his aggressive shots and a smart play, Lucas won his first conference match with a clean score of 6-1, 6-1.
The Lions finished the day with a 6-1 win against Southern Wesleyan University.
EC Tennis Team will travel to Lawrenceville, Georgia next Thursday, February 28th against Georgia Gwinnett College, the number 1 ranked NAIA school in the nation.
