Emmanuel Baseball took on the Anderson University Trojans on Tuesday evening. The Lions once again played a solid brand of baseball, collecting 15 hits and only allowing 5. Emmanuel also played error free baseball and allowed a season low four walks on the day.
How It Happened
The Lions were able to set the tone early in the game by getting on the board in the first inning of the contest. It all started with a one out single to the right side by Brock Baughcum, and then the very next batter, Eric Pape smoked a ball into right center for a double, scoring Baughcum on the hit. The Trojans quickly answered, however, by adding a run of their own in the bottom half of the first. Leadoff hitter Tyler Miller lined a double over the left fielder's head on the first pitch he saw. He would later score on an RBI ground ball by William Thomas.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Lions bats were back in action in the third. As the Lions have seen happen so many times this season, the scoring was produced by Eric Pape and Stephen Skeggs as they both doubled in the inning. Hanon Price also had an oppo single in the inning. Meanwhile, the Lions starting pitcher Dalton Kuhn settled into the game quite nicely, retiring six of the seven batters he faced in the second and third innings and holding them scoreless along the way.
Things began to really take off for the Lions in the fifth. They produced seven runs on five hits, two walks, and two errors. Stephen Skeggs added on two more hits in the inning. Then after back to back singles in the sixth by Eric Pape and Hanon Price, the Lions added on another run on an RBI groundout to second by Jacob Teston. The Trojans were able to get one back in the bottom half of the sixth after producing three singles.
The last three innings were quiet offensively for both teams. After 5 ⅓ solid innings from Dalton Kuhn, Cole Pittman came on to pitch and was lights out for the LIons. Pittman threw 2 ⅔ scoreless and allowed only one hit on the day.
After gaining another run in the ninth on yet another RBI double by Eric Pape, J.P. Williams came on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning for the Lions.
Eric Pape went 4-5 with 3 doubles.
Stephen Skeggs is hitting .571 in the month of March.
The Lions have a team ERA of 3.25 in March.
The Lions will play host to North Greenville University in a three-game series this weekend. Game one will be Friday evening at 2:30 p.m. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
