FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College Archery Team once again claimed the 2018 South-East Regional Outdoor Collegiate Championship. This victory marks the 7th consecutive Regional Championship for the Lions under the guidance of head coach Rodney Estrada. The Lions have won every regional championship since the programs inception 7 years ago.
The competition included teams from Georgia Tech, Auburn University, University of Florida, Duke, and Georgia State University. While the Lions were put to the test against powerhouse schools, they easily swept the competition placing first in Individual, Team, and Mixed Team categories. The lions also placed first in women recurve, men and women compound, men and women barebow, and men and women bowhunter.
The second place finisher in the regional championship was Georgia Tech, who coincidentally is also led by Rodney Estrada who volunteers as Head Coach for the Yellow Jackets.
The Lions now have their focus set upon the National Championship in Newberry, Florida on May 17th-20th. 22 athletes will be competing for Emmanuel, many of whom have never experienced a national tournament, as the team is heavily weighted with freshmen. While the archers are young, they are very talented and share a common goal. Coach Estrada is confident in the group of men and women he recruited because of their coachability and resourcefulness.
Last year the Lions finished #2 in the Nation and while they would like to capture the national championship, Coach Estrada believes they are already champions in many ways.
"As long as they are proud of themselves and have done nothing to dishonor the school or themselves, and have never quit, I'm already happy." Says Coach Estrada.
His team was recognized among the top 5 archery programs in the country beside schools like Texas A&M, Columbia and Michigan State earlier this year. They have also racked up several academic awards including four National Academic All-Americans.
Congratulations to Archery on an impressive performance so far this season and good luck in the 2018 Outdoor National Championship!
